Playlist for 11-20-09, "The Lost Years of Alex Chilton and Religious Curiosities"

Third in a series of 'theme shows,' where I break down all the music I play on the program into nice, neat little boxes. This one was kinda different, since half the program focused on one musician. That said, Alex Chilton is basically a genre all his own. Since his first and only hit single at the age of 16 with the Box Tops (the excellent tune "The Letter,") he has influenced countless alternative rock and 60's throwback groups with Big Star and then destroyed all traces of that influence with his solo career.

More or less, these records feature a band of musicians that probably first heard the tunes a day before recording them (if at all,) Chilton's "I-don't-give-a-fuck" mentality regarding quality, and countless covers of obscure blues tunes. Aside from that, he developed a habit of pissing people off on purpose during this part of his career, as is evident in tunes like "Riding Through the Reich," and scummily deranged covers of his own beloved discography.

Basically, he's my hero, so I devoted an entire hour to these rarely-heard recordings. Of course, I played a few later Big Star tunes because those are basically the same type of thing.

The second half of the program dealt with obscure religious records from the 1960's and 70's. Mostly private-press home-recorded type deals with a psychedelic bent, but also some oddball kid tunes. Pretty self-explanatory, though not like much other religious music you're likely to hear.

A Chiltonian worldview...

Well, I decided to play the works of one of my favorite musicians for this week's Obscuro! That musician is Alex Chilton, the man behind the Box Tops, Big Star, and a whole string of bizarre solo albums. Obviously, I'll be focusing mostly on those, since I am "Bizarro" Jerry, plus they're fun to listen to.

...Haven't quite figured out what the second half of the show will feature, but in honor of this decision, and Alex's 59th birthday which is coming up in December, I'm posting a rare radio performance/interview from 1978. This was during the "Like Flies on Sherbert" portion of his career (known for drugged-out songs, obscure blues covers, haphazard musicianship, and mostly Alex acting like an offensive jerk because he thinks it's funny) meaning it features knocks against former Big Star bandmates, a pretty obviously drunken Alex, horribly outdated country covers, and a parody of "Jingle Bells" called "Riding Through the Reich." Also, his backup singers apparently can't sing too well.

Anyhow, enjoy that, and check out the Obscuro! back catalog if you're bored. For more Chilton-y goodness, be sure to tune into the program this week from midnight-2 am Thursday night.

Playlist for 11-13-09, "Electronic Pioneers"

The second in a series of shows focusing on one specific aspect of the show, this past Thursday night's edition featured the music of early synthesizers, tape loops, sound manipulation, and the innovators who began using them. This includes musicians like Bruce Haack, who invented many of his own synthesizers and created an entirely unique sound with them, the Silver Apples, whose rapid drums and strange oscillators predated techno by about 30 years, and Fifty Foot Hose, a 60's psychedelic group who also used strange electronics to develop their sound. Shameless self-plug, but still a download or two

The band I play guitar/sing sometimes in, Whimper Warrior, has just recorded and released our first EP. Basically, we recorded it ourselves in a studio during the graveyard shift on borrowed time, abused printing privileges at a job or two to create the artwork (stole a 19th century painting for the cover art as well) and 'pressed' the CD with a burner working on overtime and some spray paint for the artwork. It's what I like to call the 'lazy independent.' We're thinking $2 a copy since we put a lot of sweat into this shit, plus it's half an hour long (even with just 5 songs.) Here's an idea of what's to be expected. It's a track called "Sandbox," and it's brought to you in high-quality .wav format.

This week's edition of Obscuro! will feature 'electronic pioneers.' This includes early synthesizer-based musicians, rock bands with electronic leanings, and a whole lot of fucked-up noise. It will be volume 2 in a genre-series I'm doing, which started with last week's "Incredibly Strange Metal, Basement Funk and Hard Rock Oddities." Dunno how long this'll last for...probably til I get bored and start doing something else. So, enjoy for the moment. Or don't. But, you can always check out the Obscuro! back catalog.

Playlist from 11-6-09, "Incredibly Strange Metal, Basement Funk and Hard Rock Oddities"

As the title of this post indicates, the show this past Thursday DID have a theme, or sorts. I covered those 3 genres as extensively as possible (in a 2-hour time frame.) Here's a brief summary of the stuff I was playing:

Incredibly Strange Metal: There are numerous 'incredibly strange music' compilations, but most of them don't cover all the outsiders and oddballs present in the metal genre. This includes misguided foreign metal releases, tax-scam albums put together by metal label execs who probably haven't actually HEARD any metal, and a lot of loners who cut their own solo metal albums.

Basement Funk: Judging by the sheer number of albums recorded in basements as-is, it shouldn't be that hard to find a few funk bands doing the DIY thing, right? This includes a lot of private press albums, and the legendary works of Gary Wilson

Hard Rock Oddities: Mostly just an excuse to play a lot of unknown classic-rock-era bands. There were some pretty weird ones, though. I.E. Hampton Grease Band, Creepy John Thomas, Yahowa 13, etc.

You can download this show here, and the entire playlist is below:

Nothing is more adorable than a child's laughter...except a kid singing some songs his dad wrote about skeletons and shit

Since I don't have too much to talk about or anything really cool to post (that stuff is being reserved for the show this week), here are some songs by kids.

1. Dandelions - The College School (1971)
This is a song recorded by a duo of really young girls. They like to sing about how they learned to sing/play and how this dude is going to cut their album (which apparently he did, since it exists.) Apparently, they play the guitars on this song too. Dunno, but there might be some underlying Christian messages on their record.

2. The Stinky Puffs - Menendez' Killed Their Parents (1995)
A little tune about...you guessed it...those dudes who killed their parents for virtually no reason. Simon Fair Timony (Jad Fair of Half Japanese's one-time stepson) fronts this band, and does a damn fine job at it. There's a tribute to Kurt Cobain (who was apparently going to help out with a Stinky Puffs record) on this album, called "A Little Tiny Smelly Bit of..."

3. Eyeball Skeleton - Eyeball Skeleton (2005)
I guess this isn't quite the same, since their dad writes the majority of the songs, but he still lets his REALLY young sons play guitar and bass, and sing their ridiculous horror-themed lyrics. Good times are had by all.

If you're tuning into Obscuro! this week, you're going to hear the first of what MIGHT be a series of specially-themed shows. This time around, the focus is 'Incredibly Strange Metal, Basement Funk and Hard Rock Oddities.' I know that's a pretty broad topic, but 2 hours is a lot of time to fill with music. Plus, I've got at least a few records in each of these subjects. That's it for now.

Bizarro Jerry's Devil's Night Spectacular! 10-30-09 playlist and more

I concocted a rather spooky collection of tunes for the program which aired on Devil's Night. Instead of the usual 'unifying' theme, these songs were all over the place, ranging from black metal to rap to reggae to 1950's instrumental throwaways. Aside from that, I brought back the vocal effects and had some scary-as-shit slowed-down laughing and such, and played more clips from old horror films than your mind can stand probably. All in all, a great soundtrack to your Halloween party, even though it's the day after Halloween.
